302 students: Tell us about yourselves

As we start the beat reporting class, we'd like to know a little bit more about you. By the time class begins you each will have received an email inviting you to join the On The Beat blog. Please sign in (you may need to create a Google account if you don't already have one) and create a short post answering the following questions:
- What's your name?
- Where are you from?
- What year are you in school?
- What is your career goal?
- What do you like to read?
- Where do you get your news?
- Do you have any journalism experience?
- Do you have a blog?
- What are passionate about?
- Is there anything else you'd like us to know about you?

Make sure you use bio as a label for your post and please put your name in the headline.

Blogging is good writing practice. But remember whatever you post is public. You should take care to follow the same spelling, grammar and style points you would use if you were writing for print.

Your deadline for this short post is by the beginning of class Thursday, Aug. 28.

Not sure this is quite what we are supposed to do...

- name: Shannon Smith
- from: Hickman, NE
- year: Junior
- career goal:
To work for a national magazine as a reporter/graphic designer
- Reading list?
I used to read everything as a child, and I mean everything, mostly to avoid awkward interactions at family social functions. Now that I am forced to read for college, I enjoy it and do it less. But I have a list of classics that I am trudging through and I really enjoy poetry like that of e.e. cummings.

- Where do you get your news?
My google home page mainly, but I try to watch the news and read newspapers when I get a chance.

- Do you have any journalism experience?
Yes. Daily Nebraskan, + College of Journalism projects.

- Do you have a blog?
The COJMC blog for Kosovo, if that counts, and my myspace blog, which shouldn't count if we are talking about intelligent postings. :)

- Passions: Movies, making a difference, chocolate

- Is there anything else you'd like us to know about you?
I hate socks.

- What is your career goal?
After graduation I’d like to join the Peace Corp for a few years. When I’m done there I plan on following the wind. The only qualification I have for the wind’s direction is working abroad with an organization that helps people in need.

- What do you like to read?
As a child my mom made me sign up for the summer reading club at our local library. Even though I won prizes (Arby’s sandwiches, snap bracelets and things of that sort) I hated every sentence I stammered out. Gradually I changed my mind. Somewhere between Little House on the Prairie and The Chronicles of Narnia, I started to love reading. This summer I spent two hours in the Love Library stacks surrounded by books about South Africa. I hope my mother is proud.

- Where do you get your news?
CNN.com, The New York Times, and occasionally I peruse Perez Hilton (don’t judge) but I wouldn’t qualify his blog real news.

- Do you have any journalism experience?
High School News Magazine and Newspaper
DailyER Nebraskan
Journalism College In-Depth Reporting Trip
This year I’m planning on writing for the Daily Nebraskan.

- Do you have a blog?
Nope.

- What are passionate about?
Spending time with my family, giving more than I receive, praying, reading, human rights, world issues, learning, and Justin Timberlake (again don’t judge)

- Is there anything else you'd like us to know about you?
I carry tissues in my purse for people who sniff in class. I’m not kidding. I will offer you one.

I'm James Corley, from Oklahoma City. I'm a junior this year. I'm studying to be a sports journalist, preferably an editor at a Big XII paper. And then eventually ESPN, of course.

I enjoy reading--James Bond novels, Harry Potter (can't get enough), my three newspapers (thanks, student readership program!). I've never been too fond of textbooks though.

I read the JournalStar, World-Herald and the Daily Nebraskan every day. When I'm home, I read The Oklahoman and the Tulsa World. I also frequently check espn.com for anything I haven't already seen on SportsCenter.

The only journalism experience I have is what I've done in class. But I'm hoping to change that very, very soon.

I do have a blog. It's down at the moment, but when I get it back up it's http://sportmonk.com. It's my own sports blog with stuff I've written back to senior year of high school (mostly Husker football).

I love sports, if it isn't already obvious. For me there are four seasons: college football, NBA, Olympics (every other year), and nothing-good-is-happening-right-now. College football is my favorite. I'll watch some MLB every once in a while too.
